Dear members
We've had reports of a potential sewage leak that may have affected the canal towards Macclesfield. At the moment we've been unable to confirm this and continue to investigate.
In the meantime, we are advising the following precautions:
Avoid swimming in the canal
If you're on the water keep on the Poynton side of the boat house and head North away from Macclesfield
Please be extra vigilant with washing your hands, boats and paddles after sessions and seek medical attention if you feel unwell after a paddle and explain where you've been.
Once we have more information /clarification we will let you know.
Kind regards
MADCC Committee
Caution - potential sewage leak Macclesfield Canal
Re: Caution - potential sewage leak Macclesfield Canal
We have been in touch with CRT who have had someone on site investigating. Their position is that there has been no sewage spillage but that there is some organic matter in the canal, which is possibly what sparked the original report to us. Organic matter is a broad category which could include animal waste or fertiliser. Either way it would be best to continue to avoid the stretch of canal south of the shed (I.e.towards Macclesfield) and assume an increased risk while water levels remain low. Sensible precautions should include avoiding unnecessary contact with the water, particularly immersion, and follow good hand hygiene precautions such as use of sanitizer etc.
